Demise of the V-sign?
It seems to have been taken over in most places by the single digit salute. The V-sign has always had a sense of emphatic, defiant Britishness about it and I'm sorry to see that go.

Is this just another facet of globalisation, a surrender to the inevitable march towards uniformality? Is it a condition of the UK's participation in the European Union? Or is it simply easier to raise one finger than two?

Re: Demise of the V-sign?
It is too ambiguous and niche for widespread international acceptance. It is the beta-max of hand gesture insults.

Re: Demise of the V-sign?
Wasn't it originally aimed at the French to signify that archers hadn't had those two fingers cut off which was a normal practice if captured?
It may be a EU directive by the grumpy French or more likely it's creeping Americanisation with the single digit version.

On here it's been replaced by the slow wanker sign.

People criticised Liam Gallagher but at least he was the making a stand, trying to save our cultural heritage.

No basis for that origin as 1) there is no reason to capture yeoman archers in the first place as they could not be ransomed for anything, just kill them if you are that worried about them killing you later. 2) Even if, you need three fingers to draw a longbow so why cut off 2 why not 1 or all 3. 3) There is no reference to it before the 20th century, which there is of other similar gestures.

I love a good v sign.

The one place you will still see it is at football. The picture the other week that jack was in where everyone was giving shit to john terry, I'm pretty sure there were a few there.

Have a look around the ground or on the box today (if you're not going).

Re: Demise of the V-sign?
Always thought of the V as a polite 'Fuck off' where at the lone middle finger is the much ruder 'fuck off you cunt'

Re: Demise of the V-sign?
Americans do a slightly different "Bird" to us.
We hold the middle finger up proud, pulling the other fingers in with the aid of the thumb.
Our inbred cousins seem to allow all fingers in on the act, albeit bent, with even the thumb almost giving a "Thumbs Up".

Re: Demise of the V-sign?
I think biting the thumb or thumbing one's nose pre-dates both these gestures
